Pros:
  • sensational image quality in the frame centre,
  • decent image quality on the edge of the frame,
  • lack of problems with the longitudinal and lateral chromatic aberration,
  • moderate distortion,
  • slight astigmatism,
  • very good coma correction,
  • proper work against bright light,
  • small dimensions and weight.

Cons:

  • too high vignetting,
  • a bit fickle autofocus.

What can be said...this Canon lens is really a good piece of work. For a ‘pancake’ type of device its performance is simply sensational and you get it all for a sensible amount of money. We regret only one thing: the fact that the lens is not as fast as f/2.0. After all if it was possible to manufacture a small 2/22 lens for the EOS M system, a production of a 2/24 instrument would be also doable, even at a cost of the slight increase of physical weight and dimensions. On the other hand you should be pleased that, after almost ten years of a shortage finally the EF-S system has another ‘prime’…
