The Nikkor AF-S 105 mm f/1.4E ED didn’t have it easy when it comes to the performance against bright light. First of all you get that really big front element which doesn’t move and is just slightly hidden inside the casing. Additionally, the optical construction of the lens means you deal here with as many as 18 air-to-glass surfaces. A relatively short casing of the instrument and the inner focusing mechanism make it problematic when it comes to using a big number of internal apertures.
As a result the final performance doesn’t impress. There are a lot of flares and decrease of the contrast in many cases is only too obvious. Unfortunately it means you cannot assess the Nikkor highly in this category.
