In this category you have to take into account the presence of similar problems like we've seen during tests of such models as the Sony 200-600 mm and the Nikkor 180-600 mm. After all you deal here with a closed construction – all parts moving inside – so a place where you can put appropriate apertures and ribbing is very limited indeed. What's more, in case of the Sony 400-800 mm the bar is set even a tad higher because it has the biggest front element and the most complex optical construction. The producers used here as many as 19 groups of lenses so 38 air-to-glass where you can catch unwanted reflections of light.
Taking it all into account the photos presented below don't look especially bad.Of course they are far from the right level and good performance but the effects still look better than in case of the Sony 200-600 mm and the Nikkor 180-600 mm. If you add to that typical problems, so the presence of flairs when the sun is situated inside the frame and a brightening of one frame corner when the sun is right outside one of the corners, you remain with just one issue: a noticeable problem with a contrast loss when the sun is a tad further away from the corner and the appearance of a colourful arc of light.
