Pros:
- handy, slight casing,
- excellent image quality on the frame centre,
- sensible image quality on the edge of the frame,
- slight longitudinal chromatic aberration,
- good control of coma,
- very low astigmatism,
- proper performance against bright light,
- silent, quick, and accurate autofocus,
- moderate focus breathing,
- sensibly looking out-of-focus areas.
Cons:
- very high vignetting,
- bothersome distortion for RAW files,
- a bit too high lateral chromatic aberration,
- too weak correction of spherical aberration.
They achieved these goals but only in exchange for a whole bunch of compromises. The optics of the Sigma C 12 mm f/1.4 DG is not able to guarantee you good image quality on the edge of the frame. It also doesn't correct lateral chromatic aberration and spherical aberration in a proper way, giving up completely when it comes to distortion and vignetting correction. There are far too many compromises for calling the tested lens a big fat success story.
As it happens I own both the manual Samyang 12 mm f/2 CS NCS as the Fujifilm X mount version and the Sony E 11 mm f/1.8. I did think seriously about exchanging these lenses for the new Sigma; still the results it got in our test deterred me successfully. I suppose this statement is a good summary of the Sigma test.
