11. Summary

Pros:

  • a handy, lightweight housing,
  • excellent image quality in the frame centre,
  • good image quality on the edge of the frame,
  • moderate longitudinal chromatic aberration,
  • low lateral chromatic aberration,
  • good control of spherical aberration,
  • low astigmatism,
  • proper performance against bright light,
  • silent, quick, and accurate autofocus,
  • sensible appearance of out-of-focus areas.

Cons:

  • very high vignetting,
  • bothersome distortion on RAW files and uncorrected JPEG files as well,
  • the ring next to the front element peels off.
The previously tested Sigma model from this line, the C 12 mm f/1.4 DC, made me hardly enthusiastic with its performance. In the case of its younger 1.4/15 brother, the situation is quite different. Firstly, it provides excellent image quality across the whole aperture range and across the frame. As if it wasn't enough, it deals well or very well with the majority of crucial optical aberrations. Weak results can be observed but only in predictable categories, namely distortion and vignetting. When it comes to distortion, the lens provides a sufficient amount of field of view in order to correct it to practically zero and still have some field to spare.

As if it wasn't enough, the new Sigma that costs $580 manages to defeat the Sony E 15 mm f/1.4 G, which is $270 more expensive, in a significant number of categories and in other categories you see at least a draw. Overall you can say that, out of these two, the cheaper device is definitely a better instrument and we think it is also completely recommendable.
