11. Summary

Pros:

  • solid, weather-sealed casing made of aluminum,
  • excellent resolution in the frame centre,
  • very good image resolution on the edge of the APS-C/DX sensor,
  • good resolution on the edge of full frame,
  • moderate longitudinal chromatic aberration,
  • slight lateral chromatic aberration,
  • lack of any serious distortion problems,
  • low astigmatism,
  • slight vignetting on the APS-C/DX sensor,
  • silent and more or less efficient autofocus,
  • out-of-focus areas pleasing to the eye,
  • 5-year warranty,
  • very good price-quality and price-performance ratio.

Cons:

  • high vignetting on full frame,
  • performance against bright light could have been better,
  • distinct focus breathing.
The Viltrox AF 35 mm f/1.8 EVO is hardly a faultless device, but all its slip-ups are completely forgivable, especially if you take into account its price, reaching almost $400, several hundred lower than the price of the Sony FE 35 mm f/1.8 and the Nikkor Z 1.8/35. If you add to this the fact that in many important categories like resolution, coma, astigmatism, chromatic aberration or vignetting, the Viltrox is able to defeat its rivals or fare as well as them, you will be very eager to grant it a really high note in this test.

You can boldly state that you deal with another strong launch of Viltrox, one of the whole series. In our opinion, this lens will certainly find plenty of satisfied users.
