6. Chromatic and spherical aberration

Chromatic aberration

A complex optical construction of the Aurora 1.4/35, simply larded with special elements, gave you some reasons to think that there wouldn't be any unpleasant surprises connected to correcting chromatic aberration. Indeed, this is the case. The photo below shows clearly that the longitudinal version of this aberration is kept firmly in check up from the maximum relative aperture.

Now let's say something more about lateral chromatic aberration – its performance, depending on the used detector and aperture value, presents a graph below.

In case of the APS-C/DX sensor, most of the results fit a range we call very low. Near the maximum relative aperture, you get results that are just low and the same can be said about the full performance range on the edge of full frame. The tested lens should be praised here, but in order to keep the balance, you have to mention that most of its rivals fare better in this category. Only the Nikkor Z 1.4/35 is an infamous exception to this rule.

Spherical aberration

In the first photos of this chapter, you can notice a slight focus shift. As you close the aperture down, the depth of field moves slightly towards greater distances. Problems with spherical aberration are also visible when it comes to defocused circles of light we got before and behind the focus. The first of them has soft edges and the second one – a brighter rim.

On the other hand, the resolution in a range from f/1.4 to f/2.8 is very good, without characteristic mist connected to bad correction of spherical aberration. It allows us to think that, overall, this aberration level is not especially high.
