6. Chromatic and spherical aberration

Chromatic aberration

Longitudinal chromatic aberration should not cause us any serious problems. The photographs below clearly show that this aberration is well controlled, and only very slight color fringing in out-of-focus areas can be noticed around the maximum aperture.

Let us now check how well the lens corrects lateral chromatic aberration. Its behavior depending on the sensor used and the aperture setting is presented below.

The performance in this category also deserves praise. At the edge of the APS-C/DX sensor, the results are low, while at the edge of the full-frame sensor they are even lower, falling on the borderline between very low and low levels. In this category, the Viltrox 1.4/85 performed very similarly, while the lens from Meike performed even better.

Spherical aberration

The first photographs in this chapter reveal a slight focus shift. As the aperture is stopped down, the depth of field moves slightly toward greater distances.

Problems with spherical aberration are also visible in the appearance of the out-of-focus discs of light captured in front of and behind the focal plane. The first of these discs has soft edges, while the second features a brighter rim.

On the other hand, image resolution across the f/1.4 to f/2.8 aperture range is very good, and there is no visible characteristic veiling haze associated with poorly corrected spherical aberration. This suggests that, overall, the aberration cannot be particularly severe, although it would also be difficult to describe its correction as exemplary.
