Sirui Aurora 85 mm f/1.4

8. Coma, astigmatism and bokeh

The tested lens performs quite well in terms of coma. This aberration increases as we move away from the center of the frame, but fortunately, it does so very gradually. In the APS-C/DX corner, we can see only a minimal enlargement of the diode image, while in the full-frame corner the problem becomes somewhat more pronounced, with the first signs of wing-shaped distortion appearing. The performance here appears to be slightly better than that of the Viltrox and Meike.

To provide a complete picture of the lens’s performance in this category, we decided to also present crops from photographs of the sky taken from the upper-right corner of the full-frame image. This time, however, we show samples at f/1.4, f/2.0, and f/2.8. The conditions proved to be more challenging here, as the wings appeared much more clearly than in the case of the diode. Nevertheless, the result is still slightly better than that of the competitors, and the problem mainly affects blue light.

Astigmatism, understood as the average difference between the horizontal and vertical MTF50 values, amounted to 5.5%. This result lies on the borderline between the very low and low levels, so the tested lens definitely deserves praise in this category.

The appearance of out-of-focus images is decent. The distribution of light within the discs is not perfectly uniform, as traces of the onion-ring bokeh effect can be seen. Fortunately, the brighter rim that appears when the aperture is stopped down more strongly is not particularly intense.

Mechanical vignetting, on the other hand, is clearly visible at both f/1.4 and f/2.0, and it does not disappear completely even at f/2.8. In this respect, the Aurora also failed to impress us.
