1. Introduction

Any respectable camera system should offer its users a fully-fledged macro lens, meaning one capable of achieving a magnification ratio of at least 1:1. The L-mount system is well served in this respect, as all three of its major players have introduced conventional macro lenses with focal lengths around 100 mm and a maximum aperture of f/2.8. Sigma was the first, launching the 105 mm f/2.8 DG DN Macro Art in September 2020. Panasonic joined the group in January 2024, followed by Leica in June 2026.

However, the selection does not end there, as independent manufacturers are becoming increasingly active in this market. In the macro lens segment, Venus Optics Laowa is particularly prominent, offering several manual-focus macro lenses for the L-mount.

It is worth emphasizing, however, that the Panasonic Lumix S 100 mm f/2.8 Macro stands out from its competitors thanks to its remarkably compact dimensions and low weight. How has this affected its optical performance? We invite you to read the following sections and find out.
