1. Introduction

I am very glad that independent producers are serious when it comes to the development of systems with sensors smaller than full frame. Launches of lenses from this segment have been quite regular. Undoubtedly Sigma belongs to these producers – lately they presented such interesting instruments as the Sigma A 17-40 mm f/1.8 DC or the superzoom Sigma C 16-300 mm f/3.5-6.7 DC OS.

In August 2025 also the Sigma C 12 mm f/1.4 DC joined the group of models designed to cooperate with APS-C/DX sensors, offered as Canon R, Fujifilm X, Sony E, and L-mount versions.

It's worth noticing that with this launch the number of no full frame C series primes as fast as f/1.4 increased to five instruments with focal lengths ranging from 12 to 56 mm. The following chart stacks up all of them.

The new Sigma is a very interesting launch as it definitely moves the limits forward when it comes to ultra wide angle lenses. So far, the widest f/1.4 lens designed for APS-C/DX sensors was the Viltrox AF 13 mm f/1.4 tested and praised by us. Sony approached this problem in a different way: they applied a bit slower aperture, that of f/1.8 but also a shorter focal length, 11 mm. Their instrument also fared well in our tests so the new Sigma has to face a really fierce competition, with a bar raised very high.
