In the category of performance against bright light the Sigma had it difficult indeed. First of all you deal with a lens that has to cover a really impressive range of angles of view. It forces to use a complex optical system, with as many as 14 optical groups, 28 air-to-glass surfaces where you can catch unwanted reflections. As if it wasn't enough, with such a wide focal range this system has to change a lot and it makes inserting apertures and ribbing very difficult.
Despite this fact the Sigma C 20-200 mm f/3.5-6.3 DG dealt in this category really well. Flares can be caught but they are few and far between, without high intensity. What's more, there is no trace of any global contrast loss. I am really nicely surprised because I expected here a far weaker performance – a round of applause for the Sigma!
