11. Summary

Pros:

  • very versatile parameters combined with the 1:2 macro mode,
  • sensibly build, compact barrel,
  • very good image quality in the frame centre across the whole focal range,
  • good image quality on the edge of the APS-C/DX sensor,
  • sensible image quality on the edge of full frame in the 20-100 mm range,
  • imperceptible longitudinal chromatic aberration,
  • moderate lateral chromatic aberration,
  • properly corrected coma,
  • lack of problems with astigmatism in the 20-100 mm range,
  • slight vignetting on the APS-C sensor,
  • sensibly-looking out-of-focus areas for a superzoom-type lens,
  • good performance against bright light,
  • silent, quick, and accurate autofocus,
  • low focus breathing.

Cons:

  • noticeable astigmatism at the maximum focal length,
  • huge vignetting on full frame,
  • distinct distortion on both ends of the focal range.
I do like testing lenses such as the Sigma C 20-200 mm f/3.5-6.3 DG because the result of the test is always a mystery. Such unique parameters nobody else dared to use before mean there might be a lot of compromises but you can only guess where they are to be found.

Of course distortion and vignetting are two areas that come to your mind as in contemporary lenses they are more often than not neglected, left to camera software to deal with. Indeed, the tested Sigma performed in accordance with our expectations because in these testing categories exactly it showed weaker results. Still such a performance was only to be expected so it didn't worry me too much.

Still the fact that these two aberrations are in reality the only serious compromises we managed to find during our tests is a nice and quite big surprise. This lens features a whole list of advantages, providing images of very good quality in the frame centre and in a very wide focal range. At the same time in the range from 20 mm to a bit over 100 mm we shouldn't have any reservations concerning image quality even in the very corner of full frame.

The Sigma C 20-200 mm f/3.5-6.3 DG was launched on the market with a price that doesn't exceed $1000. Taking into account the fact what you got instead this price tag is nothing exorbitant. Paying that much you get a very flexible lens that might serve you well during any trip or photographic walk, without a necessity to carry along more instruments. As a bonus you also get the 1:2 macro mode.
