11. Summary

Pros:

  • very solid, closed and weather-resistant mechanical construction,
  • excellent resolution in the frame centre,
  • good resolution on the edge of the APS-C/DX sensor,
  • sensible resolution on the edge of full frame,
  • negligible longitudinal chromatic aberration,
  • low lateral chromatic aberration,
  • lack of any serious coma problems,
  • slight astigmatism,
  • moderate vignetting on the APS-C/DX,
  • pleasing-to-the-eye blurry areas for a zoom lens,
  • good performance against bright light,
  • very low level of focus breathing,
  • silent, fast, and very accurate autofocus.

Cons:

  • significant vignetting on full frame near the maximum relative aperture,
  • a tad too high distortion on full frame.
The Nikkor Z 24-70 mm f/2.8 S II proved to be a lens that is sharper than its predecessor. It deals with vignetting and performance against bright light better, without these unpleasant moustache distortion. The only setback, even if slight, we observed was in the case of coma. If you add to that a very good performance in all other testing categories and an improved work culture of the autofocus within a closed mechanical construction, you get just about everything you can expect from a well-put-together successor of a valued journalistic lens.

Its price, reaching $2800 is the only fly in this otherwise excellent ointment. I'd really love to see an amount reduced by, let's say, 15-20%. I hope if enough time passes from the date of launch the price will eventually be lowered, and I sincerely wish you and myself to live long enough to see it with your own eyes.
