Pros:

  • very solid, weather-sealed casing made of metal,
  • sensational image quality in the frame centre,
  • very good image quality on the edge of the APS-C sensor,
  • good image quality on the edge of full frame,
  • lack of problems with spherical aberration,
  • slight longitudinal chromatic aberration,
  • sensational correction of lateral chromatic aberration,
  • zero distortion,
  • very low astigmatism,
  • accurate and silent autofocus.

Cons:

  • huge focus breathing,
  • price.
The situation with this lens is very similar to the situation of the test of the Panasonic S Pro 1.4/50. Once again you deal with an outstandingly sharp lens that features a long list of assets and just one serious flaw, one that is bothersome only for video recording users. Such a model is a strong candidate for our 'Editor's Choice' badge. Like in the case of the Panasonic, mentioned above, I decided not to grand that badge after all.

If a lens comes with a truly cosmic price tag, that of about $5775, is significantly big and heavy, and is produced by a very renowned manufacturer, you expect an outstanding performance, nothing less. Meanwhile in our test it got several medium results – coma could have been a bit less pronounced, the appearance of out-of-focus circles of light could have been nicer, the autofocus could have been faster, the performance against bright light – a tad better. It's true that we didn't have a reason to criticise the Leica in any of these categories but if you handle a piece of equipment that is positioned at such a high price point you are fully entitled to extremely high expectations.

All my remarks don't change the fact that the Leica APO-Summicron-SL 75 mm f/2 ASPH. is an extremely sharp lens that will be listed as a record-breaking model of the L-mount system for a very long time. We should give it a particular credit for just that.
